Students tell us they don’t like reading and that it is boring, but it is easy to see why: we always give them a limited number of books over the years, which they didn't choose, they have to finish, which take too long, and with pressure and testing throughout - for their whole school life! For too long, there has been an over-emphasis on reading comprehension and reading to teach new language. So we have to move away from these traditional and often unhelpful practices, and create a vital balance between ‘reading for tests’ and ‘reading for pleasure’. Only then does learner motivation and confidence return with dramatic, proven results in language acquisition and reading fluency.
